How do you craft visualisations for event booths, stage sets, retail POS, or merch that turn ideas into client "must-haves"? As a creative director with years in retail, experiential, brand, and expos. I have pitched pop-up wonders to stage set stunners. When pitching, our 3D mock ups need to achieve the right balance between inspiration and practicality.

𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗺: 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲’𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝘄𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝘁?

Wireframe 3D CAD as a pitch? Lazy and rushed. Focus on design, not just structure. Here’s the realism debate:

 • 𝗣𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰: Screams pro but risks seeming "done," limiting that important conversation that allows them to make tweaks and be part of the process. Ideal for final proposals.

 • 𝗦𝗲𝗺𝗶-𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰: Less wow, more wow-how. Great for printed graphics, it cuts faff and render time, keeping pitches nimble.

 • 𝗦𝗸𝗲𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗱: Tools like Maxon Cinema 4D’s Sketch and Toon, YMA Toon Studio https://lnkd.in/eQxAk6Sp (shout out to The Pixel Lab), or Blender's Grease Pencil spark ideas without "final" vibes. Think 3D doodling! This is the king of ideation.

Semi-realistic wins for print-heavy reviews, staying flexible.

Pro tip: organise assets in your 3D editor for live tweaks on client calls, don't make then wait for a new render, seal the deal.

𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝘄𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗿?

Static renders in a PDF? So last millennium! Elevate the UX with:

 • 𝗩𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗼: Great for motion or narrative. Render times hurt, but Unreal Engine’s real-time magic dodges that (if you tame the learning curve).

 • 𝗣𝗮𝗻𝗼𝗩𝗥/𝗢𝗯𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗩𝗥 (ggnome.com): Low render time, high interactivity. Clients love 360-degree clicks with spec pop-ups.

 • 𝗔𝗥/𝗩𝗥: using the likes of Zappar brings booths to life, as a miniature or life-sized mixed reality experience. The latter is very useful with clients who struggle with visualising scale in their mind's eye, and much cheaper than full VR, and with Zappar's WebAR, there is less AR app faff.

 • 𝗦𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻: Unsung hero! Browser-based, it does statics, animations, interactive, even AR, with zero hassle for clients. If you need photorealistic, pre-bake your textures first.

Match the format to the pitch: videos for big concepts, Spline for quick retail POS feedback.

𝗔𝗜: 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗧𝘂𝗿𝗯𝗼

AI’s slashing grunt work. Spline AI 3D Generation turns text into tweakable meshes in seconds. Adobe Substance 3D with Firefly conjures photoreal backdrops fast. They amplify your vision, not replace it. With a special shout out to KeyShot provides a new way to think about 3D creative pipelines combining your existing 3D skills with AI rendering.

Photoreal or sketched?

Unreal or Spline?
