After spending billions on the most expensive autopilot in enterprise history, Microsoft is circling the runway, trying to convince CFOs that $30/seat/month is worth it for a feature most employees ignore.

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝘆𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹?

Copilot assumed people wanted an assistant in the cockpit. But modern work doesn't happen in one aircraft, it happens across a fleet of planes simultaneously. You're editing a Google Doc, responding to Slack, presenting in Zoom. Copilot only works inside Microsoft airspace.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗔𝗜:

Every gen-AI tool promising to "take your workflow to new heights" needs a pre-flight check:

"𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗺𝗶𝗱-𝗳𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁?"

When Midjourney generates unusable hands, when Runway's motion hits turbulence, when the AI doesn't understand your brand guidelines—you don't troubleshoot the autopilot. You eject. You grab manual controls. You revert to the old tools and process that you know worked—aircraft with predictable flight characteristics. AI tools promise shortcuts at 30,000 feet. Professionals need to land the plane on deadline.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗔𝗜 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺:

Fully autonomous pipelines sound efficient until you realize you're not developing skills anymore, you're monitoring a black box. When it fails (and it will), you can't diagnose what went wrong because you never learned to fly. Trust erodes fast when you can't explain the output to a client. Displacement isn't just about jobs lost, it's about expertise atrophied.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗶𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝗼𝗳𝘁 𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗔𝗜 𝗰𝗿𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴. 𝗜𝘁'𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗹𝗼𝘁 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗳𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝗯𝗼𝗱𝘆 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲.

Microsoft hijacked "Copilot"—a term meaning "assists the pilot"—and tried to make it fly the whole mission. But pilots don't want full automation. They want reliable instruments for boring parts, so they can focus on navigation that matters.

Until AI tools understand that, every "𝘈𝘐-𝘱𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘥" 𝘢𝘯𝘯𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘢 𝘴𝘢𝘧𝘦𝘵𝘺 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘥: "𝘐𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘴𝘺𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘮 𝘧𝘢𝘪𝘭𝘶𝘳𝘦, 𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘶𝘢𝘭 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘭𝘴 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘭𝘰𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘭𝘦𝘧𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮 𝘪𝘯 2023."

Right now, many AI tools are in the hangar, engines running, going nowhere. The question isn't whether AI can fly.
