It will get you 90% of the way there. Know what happens at 91%.ย

Powerful shortcut.ย

OR, a painful handoff.ย

Know which one you're buying.

It creates. Just don't mistake that for a finished file.

Claude Design dropped last week and the hype is already loud. I haven't tried it in depth yetโ€”neither have most of the people posting about it. It's been out a few days. Test it yourself before you form an opinion.

Here's what I can tell you from adjacent experience:

I've used Claude extensively for design generation tasks.ย

- HTML output? Not bad, and at least editable if you know what you're doing.ย

- Carousels? Took longer to generate than it would have taken me to build the same thing in Figmaโ€”and ended up in the bin.ย

- PDFs? A delivery format, not a design format. Editing one is a punishment.ย

I've also spent serious time vibe-coding across Replit, Cursor, Canva Make, Wix AI and Figma Make. You can get a semi-working prototype built in an afternoon. Beyond that it's largely a proof of conceptโ€”and if you keep iterating, you'll spend just as long breaking what was already working and burning credits. It is not fun.

So here's my honest read on Claude Design for non-designers: it is genuinely for you...when there's no time, no budget, and no intention of hiring a professional. It will do impressive things and get you 90% of what you wanted. That's real value. Use it. Share it. Ship it if it's good enough.

But if you want 100%, be honest with yourself about what happens next. What it generates is not something a designer can easily pick up and refine. The editable formats (PPTX, Canva export) are workable handoffs. Everything else (HTML, PDF, interactive prototypes) is a result, not a source file. A designer receiving that isn't picking up where the AI left off. They're starting again, with your AI output as a mood board.

That's not a criticism of the tool. It's a limitation of the paradigm. It creates, it doesn't collaborate. If you know that going in, it's a powerful shortcut. If you don't, you're handing over a hot mess in a nice wrapper and wondering why the designer's quote came back higher than expected.
